skin resurfacing procedure that exfoliates the top layer of the skin

This technology is gaining popularity as a means of treating skin conditions or hair removal and is based on directing high intensity light into a focused area of skin for short intervals.

IPL technology is best employed by trained aestheticians or medical personnel who are licensed to operate these devices for hair removal or skin photo rejuvenation procedures.

In the case of hair removal, the intense pulsed light travels through the skin to strike the hair root where the light energy is converted to heat thus destroying or damaging the root's capability to regrow hair. The overall effect is that of a permanent hair reduction.

In the case of skin photo rejuvenation, IPL procedures aid in the treatment of sun or age spots, acne, rosacea, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. The intense light pulses induce micro trauma in the top layers of the skin causing the skin to heal itself with new cells hence the term photo rejuvenation.

The discomfort associated with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment ranges from slight irritation or a burning feeling to blisters depending on the device settings and experience of the operator. It is very important to check the credentials and training of the operator to avoid permanent skin damage.
HyperPigmentation is a major cause of concern and irritation for many women and there are multiple causes as follows.

Melanocytes cells in our Skin produce melanin which is responsible for the color of the skin. Whenever these cells are irritated they produce more melanin causing hyperpigmentation.

Freckles are generally inherited and exposure to the sun darkens them.

Sun spots or age spots as they are sometimes called are caused by overexposure to the sun.

Melasma is common, especially in women of Asian origin. It appears on the upper lip, nose and chin area and sometimes on the forehead and cheeks.

Melasma may be caused by genetics, some medications, oral contraception, pregnancy and nutritional deficiency.

Postinflammatory Hyperpigmentation is the result of an injury to the skin, e.g. Cuts, Acne lesions, Aggressive peeling, Sunburn and insect bites.

Some Medications may cause the skin to hyperpigment, e.g. nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) sulfonamides and barbiturates.

Dark Circles under the eyes may be inherited or caused by excessive rubbing which irritates the delicate skin.

Most of the time the dark circles under the eyes are the blood vessels that can be seen through the surface of the skin.

Treatment options for Hyperpigmentation

There are several Professional treatments for hyperpigmentation which include Microdermabrasion and Chemical peels. These treatments are most beneficial when combined with topical products.

Some of the topical treatments are products containing one or more of the following AHAs, Azelaic acid, Hydroquinone, Retinol, Kojic acid, Vitamin A,C, E and Salicylic acid. Most women prefer using Retinoids because it helps reduce hyperpigmentation and wrinkles.

Skin lightening products can be applied for 3 months and then give your skin a break for a couple of months. In some women over use of skin lightening products causes them to hypopigment (loss of color).

At home remedies include exfoliating your skin twice a week with a soft exfoliating brush or cleanser with microbeads to help remove dead skin from the surface.

Sunscreen is the most important product that should be a part of your daily regimen. It helps prevent and reduce hyperpigmentation, UV light from the sun damages collagen and darkens pigmentation.

While Waxing Hair Removal can also be performed at home, a Spa environment can use professional products and techniques that can result in better outcomes for hair removal as well as reducing the discomfort usually associated with this procedure.

The smooth skin results typically last for several weeks and hair re-growth is lighter than shaving or depilatory creams.

Correct waxing techniques, and the right wax temperature are very important in obtaining positive results. If the wax is too hot it can cause skin irritation and even blistering. 24 hours before waxing exfoliate the area with a soft dry bush or a dry towel to remove any dead skin. Avoid having a hot bath and shower for the remainder of the day of service. Do not apply any perfumed lotion or tanning lotions for at least 24 hours after waxing. Exfoliate the waxed area with a dry soft brush or a dry towel after 48 hours to prevent ingrown hair.

There are different types of waxes used in waxing hair removal, soft and hard wax. Soft wax is normally used with a strip, that means that a thin layer of wax is applied on the skin and covered with a strip of muslin or pellon material, which removes the hair as it is pulled off. This wax is used on larger parts of the body, e.g. legs, arms and backs.

Hard wax is applied in a liquid form which hardens on the skin and the wax is then gently pulled off. This wax is generally used for sensitive areas like face, underarms and bikini.
There are many kinds of microdermabrasion treatments, the most common ones are Crystal or Diamond wand. Here at Imperial Skin Care we use the Diamond Wand Microdermabrasion System.

Microdermabrasion Treatments can help to treat aging and sun-damaged skin, blemishes, fine lines and wrinkles and some types of acne and acne scarring. Because microdermabrasion removes dead surface skin cells and initiates cellular turnover, results may include improved skin tone, fewer breakouts, diminished appearance of scars, refined skin pores and a healthy glow. The suction stimulation alone boosts blood circulation and revitalizes collagen production, which instigates the regrowth of new younger-looking skin. The oxygen helps to speed up collagen production and sooth the newly exfoliated skin

Microdermabrasion Treatments are suitable for most skin colors and types. The procedure takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour. There is a little or no discomfort in this treatment, there are no side effects and your skin will look glowing and fresh almost immediately after treatment. Some more aggressive treatments may cause the skin to look slightly pink and tender for few hours afterward. You can resume normal acitivities and apply makeup and moisturizer directly after your session.

Sunscreen is extremely important. Remember to use it daily especially if you have had a Microdermabrasion treatment. Taking good care of your skin at home will help you maintain a healthy skin.

For skin conditions requiring less intensive treatments, there are also a number of products in the market for Home Microdermabrasion.
The intercellular glue that holds the dead skin cells together is dissolved by chemical agents such as AHAs that is applied on the skin.

Chemical peel treatments are used for skin fine lines and wrinkles, caused by sun exposure, aging and genetics. They can also treat sun or age spots, blemishes, melasma, acne scars and also aid in the control of acne. They also improve the texture of the skin and increase cell turnover and help in moisture retention. Most skin colors and types can benefit from light chemical peels.

Types of Chemical Peels

There are many different types of peels which fall in the category of Light Peels or Medium to Deep Peels. The Light Peels are designed to penetrate only the epidermis (outer layer), these peels are non-invasive. Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHAs) such as glycolic acid, derived from sugar cane or lactic acid from sour milk are normally known as light peels, these are used in a low percentage content. Beta Hydroxyl Acid (BHA) peels penetrate deeper into the pores and may help control oil, acne as well as remove dead skin cells.

Medium to Deep peels can only be administered by a Physician or a Medical practitioner. Medium peels are performed in the doctor’s office or in a Medical facility. TCA (trichloroacetic acid), glycolic acid (50% or more), Jessner’s and Phenol are the chemicals used for medium peels. These peels are not suitable for darker skinned people. Phenol is a highly acidic deep peel that penetrates down to the dermis. Most medium peels if not administrated properly can cause permanent hyperpigmentation or uneven skin tone. These peels are used for deeper lines and wrinkles and severe sun damaged skin.

A warming or stinging sensation is felt when a light peel is applied on the face and may last for five to ten minutes, if you feel a burning sensation let the Esthetician know so they can remove the chemical solution from your face quickly. After the peel, your skin starts peeling and may look scaly and this will last from three days to a week. It is very important to keep your skin moisturized and apply sunscreen lotion SPF 30 and above every day after a Chemical Peel Treatment. Maintaining your skin after these treatments is really important otherwise your skin will return back to its original state.
It works by using a cotton thread that is twisted and rolled along the surface of the skin, entwining the hair in the thread and lifting it out of the follicle. This is the least painful way to remove facial hair, the skin usually reacts with a little redness.

While formal Threading requires an experienced hand, there are Spring based products that leverages the principle in a form potentially usable by novices.

As an example of Threading Hair Removal treatments, we cover the following areas: Chin, Eyebrow, Upper Lip and Full Facial Threading.
The healthier the foods that you eat, the better your skin will look.

Your diet should include low fat dairy products for vitamin A which is important for healthy skin cells. Low fat yogurt is very high in vitamin A and also has live bacteria cultures that are good for your digestive well being, so it will reflect in your skin.

Berries are full of antioxidants which also help maintain a healthy skin. Fruits and vegetables should also be a large part of your diet.

Healthy oils from foods like walnuts, flaxseed, salmon and also canola oil is very important for your body. The essential fatty acids are needed for healthy cell membranes which act as a barrier to harmful toxins. The stronger the cell membranes the better your cells can hold moisture, and so leads to a healthier younger looking skin.

Consume whole wheat products and cut down your intake of sugar and salt and drink plenty of water to keep your body and skin hydrated.

Cleanse your skin twice a day with a gentle cleanser, apply moisturizer and sunscreen every morning or use a moisturizer that has sunscreen. In the evening cleanse your skin and apply a night cream. Night creams normally have more active ingredients than day creams, as some of the active ingredients make your skin sensitive to sunlight.

Once a week exfoliate your skin with a soft facial brush to remove dead skin cells.

Moisturizers and Sunscreens are very important to maintain a healthy skin.

Start taking care of your skin now with a healthy diet and daily care, so that these become a habit for long term benefit.
Moisturizers seal your skin to keep water from escaping.

Use natural oils such as olive oil, sesame oil, grapeseed oil or any other oils to help moisturize your skin. Apply this right after you shower, while your skin is still moist. Oil has more staying power than cream moisturizers. You can add a few drops of essential oils like lavender, ylang ylang or rose to the natural oil you use before applying on your body.

Avoid hot showers and baths, use warm water instead and limit how long you expose your skin to water. Hot water removes oils from your skin. If you swim a lot, shower as soon as you can after your swim and apply moisturizer all over the body.

Use cleansing creams or shower gels with added moisturizers. If you use soap make sure you choose mild soaps that have added oils and fats, e.g. olive oil soaps. Your skin should feel soft and smooth after cleansing, never tight or dry.

Apply Sunscreen all over your exposed body, every day before you go out in the sun.
The problem usually starts around puberty and for many people it can last a lifetime. Anything that causes the hormones to fluctuate, e.g. stress, illness can cause the skin to produce more oil. For lots of women hormone changes occur not only during puberty, but also at the start of every menstrual cycle. Some of the most common areas that produce more sebum (oil) are face, head, chest and back.

Our skin produces natural oil to protect itself from the environment and bacteria. The oil helps keep skin healthy and hydrated. Most people with oily skin tend to over wash their face using harsh products to get rid of the excess oil, this makes your skin produce more oil as it feels the skin does not have enough moisture to protect it.
The condition results from the action of hormones on the skin's oil glands (sebaceous glands). The sebaceous glands make an oily substance called sebum that empties onto the skin surface through the hair follicle opening (pore). The mixture of oil and cells allows bacteria that normally live on the skin to grow in the follicle openings. When this happens, pores become clogged and pimples develop.

In most cases, pimples occur on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. Acne does not present a serious health risk, but severe acne can result in permanent scarring. In addition, acne can have significant physical and psychological consequences, such as causing a poor self-image, social inhibition, and anxiety.

Frequently Asked Questions & Answers on Chemical Peels

How many sessions of chemical peeling are required generally ?
It depends on how deep or how much of blemishes or acne you have. You can get a series of 6 light chemical peels 7 to 8 days apart. After the series you should let your skin recover for 3 months. Apply a good sunscreen lotion SPF30 everyday to protect your skin.

Don't over wash or use harsh scrubs. Remember, acne is not caused by dirt. Two gentle washings a day is sufficient. Too much cleaning can leave skin irritated and dry, triggering glands to produce more oil, increasing the likelihood of pimples.

Use oil-free or non-comedogenic products (those that won't clog pores) on your face.

Don't squeeze or pick blemishes. Popping pimples can drive acne bacteria deeper into the skin. Picking can lead to more inflammation and permanent scarring.

There are several Acne Treatment products sold over the counter, most of them have Salicylic acid or Benzoyl Peroxide as the active ingredient, choose products that works for your skin, it may take 2 or 3 weeks before you see any improvement. Use products with Benzoyl Peroxide only in the evenings as it makes your skin sensitive to sunlight.

Make sure you keep your skin moisturized and wear SUNSCREEN everyday. Cleanse your face every morning and use a moisturizer with a sunscreen. Twice a week exfoliate your face with a face brush and your regular cleanser. Cleanse your face in the evening before going to bed and use a moisturizer so that your skin does not produce excess oil.

The reason for this is that the molecules of the natural foods used in home remedy are large so it is difficult for them to penetrate the skin compared to professional blemish treatment products.

Here are two home made mask recipe options you could try:

Yogurt Mask:

Plain Yogurt (Curd/Dahi) 2 tbp,
Honey 1 tsp
Whole oats/oatmeal (Porridge/Dalia) 1 tbp

Mix the above and apply on your face as a mask for 15 minutes, take a little warm water and wash your face using the oatmeal as a mild scrub. Do this once or twice a week.

The lactic acid in the yogurt is good for lightening blemishes and the honey works as an astringent as well as moisturizes the skin while the oatmeal has natural protein to promote skin growth.

Chickpea Mask:

Chickpea (gram) flour 2 tbs
Honey 1 tsp
Lemon/lime juice 1 tsp
Turmeric powder (haldi) a pinch

Mix the above with warm water and apply on your face as a mask once or twice a week for 15 minutes.

We suggest choosing one mask from above and try it for 4 to 6 weeks and then switch to the other.

Ensure you're not allergic to these ingredients and if not sure do a spot test for at least a day before applying a full facial mask.

Scars are harder to treat with home remedies.

Microdermabrasion treatment may help with reducing the scars. There are a number of products that can help for very light scars, however most scars require professional attention.

See a Dermatologist or licensed Aesthetician in a Medical spa who will analyze your skin condition and recommend a treatment suitable for your skin type.

Once again wear Sunscreen everyday as the Sun darkens the blemishes making it more difficult for you to treat them later.

Every evening before going to bed apply plain yogurt under the eye for 10 minutes and then wipe it off with a soft wet cloth. The lactic acid in yogurt helps to lighten the pigmentation.

When removing your eye make-up, make sure you use a soft cloth or cotton pads, do not pull or scrub the skin around the eyes as it is very delicate and any rough treatment will traumatize the skin which in turn will produce more pigmentation.

Get extra sleep and eat lots of berries, bright colored fruits and vegetables (as they have antioxidants) and drink plenty of water as dehydration is another cause of dark circles.

Wear sunscreen and sunglasses everytime you go out in the sun.

There are lots of under eye creams in the market that might reduce the dark circles. Some studies show that creams containing Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin K and retinol may be effective in treating under eye circles.

Make-up is another way to conceal dark circles, try mineral make-up as most mineral make-up have light reflecting minerals which help by reflecting the light off the skin and so hide the dark circles.

Exfoliate your legs and hands with a soft dry brush or a dry towel before you shower, this removes the dead skin on the surface.

Stay out of the sun between 10:00am to 4:00pm when the sun is stronger, if you have to go out, wear sunscreen on all exposed body parts and wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your face.

Don't forget to apply sunscreen on the back of your hands.

Make sure the sunscreen you use is oil free and protects you from both UVA and UVB rays.
Darkness on the neck can be caused by friction, e.g. if you wear a necklace all the time or again by hormones.

You can try these home remedies at home: Slice a lemon, sprinkle sugar on it and rub on the dark areas, do this daily to notice a difference. Apply plain yogurt (curd) to the darkened area and leave it on for 10 minutes before gently washing it off.

Papaya is another good home remedy, mash it and apply it on the affected area and leave it on for 10 minutes before washing it off. Remember it takes a while before you will see any results from using home remedy. If you shave or use depilatory creams on your underarms, try Waxing Treatment instead.

If the problem persists use lightening creams that contain Kojic acid, or hydroquinone. Your doctor will be able to recommend something.
Stretch marks can appear anywhere on the body, the most common areas are the abdomen, breasts, upper arms, thighs and hips.

While there is much debate on their effectiveness, Creams and lotion containing Cocoa butter may help reduce stretch marks. Vitamin E oil may also help reduce the marks. Use it daily for a couple of weeks to see whether this will help you to avoid more expensive procedures. Stretch marks normally fade over time. Eating a healthy diet of Fresh fruit and vegetables daily will help build collagen and strengthen skin elasticity.
